Michael Barnett is an award-winning filmmaker, commercial editor, and post-producer based in New York City.
Always on the hunt for audiovisual harmony, he loves unearthing that perfect combination of sound and image to make an idea, a feeling, or a moment hit just right.
Barnett wears the “multi-hyphenate” label proudly, having worked professionally as a director, producer, editor, animator, and visual effects artist over the last 12+ years. That diverse set of roles and experiences has fine-tuned his craft, and honed his ability to communicate his vision across every phase of a project.
He has worked with such brands as L’Oreal, Maybelline, Urban Decay, Movado, Vevo, HelloFresh, and Public Goods, among countless others. His television credits include Blue Bloods (CBS), Limitless (CBS), The Endgame (NBC), Hap and Leonard (AMC/ Sundance), Star Trek: Discovery (CBS), Star Trek: Picard (CBS), and Dickinson (Apple), etc. He has edited commercial spots featuring name talent including LeBron James, Neil Patrick Harris, and Mindy Kaling.
As an independent film producer, Mike leverages his technical experience to help craft stories at the highest levels. Mike served as Associate Producer and VFX Supervisor on the Neil LaBute film “House of Darkness,” starring Justin Long and Kate Bosworth. The film premiered at the 2022 Santa Barbara International Film Festival, and went on to screen at Fantasia Fest 2022 before being released theatrically and on VOD in September. Prior to that, he received the same credits on Theodore Schafer’s "Giving Birth To A Butterfly,” Which premiered at Fantasia Fest 2021, won the 2022 Big Apple Film Festival, and is currently streaming on Fandor. He recently helped produce the short film “The Passenger", a surreal motorcycle journey directed by Jeff Elstone and co-sponsored by Langlitz Leathers and Harley-Davidson.
Mike also writes. His TV pilot script “The Shades” (co-written with Kevin Davis) was a final-round pick for the 2019 Sundance Episodic Lab, and a Finalist in the 2019 Stage32 Comedy Writing Competition. He currently has several feature scripts in the works. His feature film script (co-written with Davis and Craig Coletta) “Limited Run” placed in the top 20% of all submitted screenplays at the 2023 Austin Film Festival and is currently in early development.
Barnett owns and operates the boutique production company Novelty Hat, which offers production & post-production services for a wide range of agencies, brands, and filmmakers.
